Mother Teresa

This year’s Day of Caring at the St. John of the Cross Catholic Worker House was nothing short of incredible. In what we can confidently say was the most impactful Day of Caring we have experienced in the last five years, volunteers came together with compassion, energy, and servant hearts to help transform our space for the families we serve.
The team from Esco tackled an enormous amount of work throughout the property. From removing overgrown garden beds and refreshing landscaping to transplanting plants and preparing new outdoor spaces, the grounds around the house now feel welcoming, peaceful, and cared for. Volunteers also worked inside the home painting rooms, reorganizing supplies, moving storage, clearing excess items, and helping improve the overall flow and function of the house.
Paper products and baby supplies were reorganized, storage spaces were reset, and linens were moved and sorted to better support daily operations for families staying in shelter. The tool room was cleaned and reorganized, creating a safer and more functional workspace for future projects.
We also want to give special thanks to our incredible handyman Kevin and additional volunteer Barak, whose hard work and dedication helped make so many of these projects possible. Their willingness to jump in wherever needed truly embodied the spirit of community and service.
Every painted wall, organized shelf, and refreshed garden bed is a reminder that people in our community care deeply about making sure families experiencing hardship still have dignity, beauty, and hope around them.
We are overwhelmed with gratitude and excited to continue building on this momentum throughout the summer. If this Day of Caring showed us anything, it is that when a community comes together in love and service, amazing things happen.

“This house looks different today because people chose to care.” 🌿
“We are stronger when we serve together.” 🤝
“They went above and beyond—making extra trips for mulch, bringing electrical tools from the office, and tackling repairs that were far beyond what we could have done on our own.” 💙

Connections matter. Friendships matter. Community matters. Sometimes the smallest connection can create the biggest impact.
Miss Chrissy and Miss Pagie have been friends for quite some time. Over the years, those friendships and community ties have continued to grow in ways that truly make a difference. Miss Pagie works for her family restaurant, Loosie’s Loose Meat Burger, and one of her friends works at Pita’s. Through those relationships, kindness found its way directly to .
Recently, Pagie’s friend from Pita’s learned there was an abundance of leftover pita meat that needed a place to go rather than being wasted. Knowing exactly who could use the help, she reached out to Pagie, who immediately knew who to call. Miss Chrissy became the point of contact, and soon more than twenty 1/2-sheet foil pans of meat arrived at Catholic Worker House.
That single connection provided enough food not only for dinner that evening, but for the entire following weekend. Staff members were even lucky enough to bring some home to share with their own families. What began as extra food turned into comfort, stability, and full meals for many people staying at the shelter.
But the story did not stop there.
The very next day, Loosie’s Loose Meat Burger received a call requesting that they provide a nightly meal for a local shelter. The food had been such a hit that someone wanted to share it with others in need. What Pagie did not realize at first was that the meal was being ordered for the very same shelter she had visited the day before — Catholic Worker House.
Moments like this remind us how deeply connected our community truly is. One friendship led to another connection, which led to meals, support, and people coming together to care for one another. We are incredibly grateful for every relationship, every volunteer, every donor, and every act of kindness that strengthens our shelter and helps us continue building a better tomorrow for those we serve.
